Thursday, February 21st, 2008

I get this question asked quite a lot so here’s the main active ingredients in Oram Plus:

1. Helichrysum italicum - also know as the curry plant, this herb has extremely powerful anti-inflammatory properties (for red, inflamed gums) and also acts as a very effective cell re-generator (which is thought to help regrow lost gum tissue or receding gums)

2. Leptospermum scoparium - common name manuka, is a powerful antibacterial agent which has been proven in scientific studies to completely kill Periodontopathic bacterial strains (the bacteria that causes gum and periodontal disease) in under 30 seconds!

3. Commiphora myrrha, commanly known as Myrrh, is becoming scientifically recognized to possess significant antiseptic, anesthetic, wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties so is great all round extract for gum problems!

4. Eugenia caryophyllus, Known commanly as Clove Bud, contains a natural compound called eugenol which is not only a powerful local antiseptic (for gum pain) but is also proven to kill the oral pathogens that are the primary cause of all gum problems!

5. Mentha piperita, also known as field mint, leaves a fresh minty taste in the mouth while being a great all round oral anti-bacterial agent against gum disease

Cranberry Juice may help with Gum Disease

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

New research presented at a recent symposium suggests that cranberry juice may help prevent certain oral health problems, including diseases of the gums and teeth. Dr. Hyun Koo from the University of Rochester examined cranberry juice’s ability to prevent Streptococcus mutans bacteria from sticking to teeth. If the bacteria cannot adhere, then they cannot develop the buildup of dental plaque that covers the teeth and begins to cause cavities and even gum disease. Dr. Koo presented his research at the Cranberry Institute’s Second Biennial Cranberry Health Research Symposium, held in October in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Prominent health experts gathered from North America to present new findings on cranberries’ role in preventing a number of diseases and infections.

4 Simple steps to combat Gum Disease!

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

1. The 2 minute Rule!

Brush very gently for at least 2 minutes, this doesn’t sound very long but get a watch and time yourself and i guarantee you will be very surprised! 2 minutes of brushing optimises the removal of plaque and food debris that you consume on a daily basis.

Brush at least twice a day!

2. Don’t neglect Flossing

Flossing is really important and is often neglected, it gets into those hard to reach places (between the teeth) that a tooth brush just can’t reach.

3. Cut out commercial toothpaste and mouthwash

Yes you heard that right, commercial toothpastes and mouthwash contain several irritants that can make your teeth and gum problems 10 times worse, Opt for a natural toothpaste that doesn’t contain fluoride or SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) such as Oram Plus

4. Don’t use tobacco products if at all possible.

Smoking has now been proven to be one of the leading factors in the formation of periodontis, so if you were thinking of quitting this could serve as quite a motivator!!

Is your Sugar Usage fueling your Gum Disease and Gingivitis?

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

It is very important to realize that often the amount of sugar you consume in your normal food as well as added onto your food can really help increase the amount of decay and bacteria in your mouth. This additional bacteria has the ability to really accelerate the level at which gum disease is present. With sugar being one of the important factors that can cause and even aggravate gum disease it is very important to cut back the amount of sugar that you consume to help reduce your risk of gum disease.

With the amount of sugar that is consumed each day, there is always room for improvement. Cutting back even small amounts can have a huge impact on the health of your teeth, and since gum disease is such a prevailing problem for most people, there is no one who is exempt from needing to reduce their sugar intake. It is very important to watch the sugar intake of children as well so as to ensure that their teeth and gums stay well protected. Never allow children to consume large amounts of sugar, this is bad for their health as well as their gums and creates bad habits.

It is best to use a sweetener alternative that is safe and does not have the harsh effects that sugar has on the teeth. You should seek out a sugar alternative that is safe and has as few calories as possible. This gives the perfect time to look for a sweetener alternative that will allow your teeth to heal and fight the gum disease. You want to seek a sweetener that does not make the gum disease worse as normal refined sugar does.

The sweetest form of alternative sweetener is a natural herb called stevia rubaudiana; this substance is a small bush that is in the chrysanthemum family. Hailing from Northeastern Paraguay it is considered to be as much as 300 times sweeter than normal table sugar. This is incredible since it requires so little to be used in order to be as effective. However, the great news is that stevia does not have the harmful side effects that traditional artificial sweeteners have

If you are hesitant to try a new product because you fear the possible harms, then take comfort that Japan has been using stevia for over 30 years including in colas, gum, and a selection of other foods since as far back as 1977. With stevia being used for so very long, it has proven a track record of safe use, unlike many of the other alternatives. While stevia is quite popular and common in other countries, it is only available as a dietary supplement in the United States.

Stevia has some great benefits though, it provides sweetener to foods and drinks without changing blood pressure levels, no carbohydrates, no tooth decay, no calories, and even the ability to help minimize hunger cravings, as well as improve digestion. This gives a large list of reasons why it is better to use stevia than any of the other alternative sweetener on the market today.

With most other artificial sweeteners adding calories and carbohydrates to your food, among the milder side effects it is easy to see why stevia is such a popular choice. With sugar added to almost everything it is no surprise that toothpaste is among the products with sweeteners added.

On top of all that Stevia has been shown to reduce gum disease, cavities and improve overall conditions in dental health. It is obvious that other sweeteners are unable to compete. Stevia is available from most good health shops, eBay and from the internet!

If you drink tea, make it the green stuff!!!

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Studies conducted have shown that drinking green tea also has the ability to help reduce the plaque index as well as gingival index. This is a huge help in decreasing overall gum disease problems. What’s more, green tea is able to provide other benefits to the body aside from helping with gum disease so it is very cost effective as well as safe.

With further studies showing that green tea extracts added onto strips that are applied to gingivitis pockets can help reduce the depth of the pockets, it seems almost immediately obvious that the form in which the green tea is used is not so much important though as reguar consumtion would have the same effect… just remember not to add sugar!!!

Cinnamon for bad breath and gum problems!!!

It’s of no surprise then that Oram Plus (natures premier tooth, gum and breath treatment) contains cinnamic aldehyde as one of it’s active ingredients!

Does heart disease go along with gum disease?

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Heart disease is a leading cause of death among men and women. Unfortunately, there seems to be evidence that gum disease can predispose someone to heart disease. This probably happens because the bacteria that causes the gum disease gets into the bloodstream. From there they attach to the fat deposits in the blood vessels. The theory goes that the result can be blood clots or a heart attack.

If you have had a heart valve replacement or other known problems with your valves, you need to take good care of your gums. Also, be sure to tell your dentist about any problems you have with your heart.

Smoking may cause up to HALF of all gum disease cases!!

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

I found an interesting article today on how smoking may be linked to gum disease, check it out by clicking here

Apparently new research indicates cigarette smoke destroys the antioxidants in your saliva called ‘glutathiones’ (which help keep your gums healthy)!!

Are There Ways to Decrease Your Likelihood of Developing Gum Disease?

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

Gum disease is the most common chronic disease condition on earth. More than half of all people eventually develop it if they live long enough. While aging is one of the risk factors, there are other factors that a person can control, which can lower your chances of developing this condition.

For one thing, quit smoking. It doesn’t matter to your gums whether you smoke cigarettes, a pipe, or a cigar, all are damaging to your gums. In fact, smokeless tobacco may be the most damaging of all. Your general health will thank you, too, when you give up this harmful habit.

Because gum disease is fought off by a healthy immune system, stress can be a factor in developing the disease. Depression, poor coping skills, and even financial woes have all been linked to an increased risk of gum disease.

If you have diabetes, your chances rise, but controlling your blood sugar will help you avoid the disease. It will help you prolong your life, too! Certainly, it is worth it to control your diabetes if you possibly can.

Pregnancy is also a time when a toll is taken on a woman’s teeth. Gum disease can be the result. If you happen to be pregnant, make sure you get your nutrition, including plenty of protein and calcium. Also make sure you take good care of your teeth by brushing and flossing them regularly.

Factors you can’t control include a predisposition to gum disease because of genetics. Even if it runs in your family, however, there are things you can do, such as using all-natural Oram Plus to promote gum health.
