4 Simple steps to combat Gum Disease!

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

1. The 2 minute Rule!

Brush very gently for at least 2 minutes, this doesn’t sound very long but get a watch and time yourself and i guarantee you will be very surprised! 2 minutes of brushing optimises the removal of plaque and food debris that you consume on a daily basis.

Brush at least twice a day!

2. Don’t neglect Flossing

Flossing is really important and is often neglected, it gets into those hard to reach places (between the teeth) that a tooth brush just can’t reach.

3. Cut out commercial toothpaste and mouthwash

Yes you heard that right, commercial toothpastes and mouthwash contain several irritants that can make your teeth and gum problems 10 times worse, Opt for a natural toothpaste that doesn’t contain fluoride or SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) such as Oram Plus

4. Don’t use tobacco products if at all possible.

Smoking has now been proven to be one of the leading factors in the formation of periodontis, so if you were thinking of quitting this could serve as quite a motivator!!

Cinnamon for bad breath and gum problems!!!

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have discovered that a natural plant constitute called cinnamic aldehyde (derived from cinnamon oil) dramatically reduced bacteria in the mouth that cause bad breath, periodontal infections and gum problems. It’s of no surprise then that Oram Plus (natures premier tooth, gum and breath treatment) contains cinnamic aldehyde as one of it’s active ingredients!

Periodontal Disease : Informative article by Dr. Zablotsky, Sacramento Periodontist is a great website for learning the facts about gum disease. Scroll down a bit and you’ll see a drawing of teeth which changes to show the progression from healthy gums to gingivitis to periodontal disease. Remember, though, that just because you have symptoms of gingivitis, it’s not a death sentence or anything! Not everyone who has gingivitis goes on to develop gum disease, and with preventive measures, such as good dental hygiene, and using healing oils, you can halt the process.

What is Periodontitis?

Monday, May 1st, 2006

The term “periodontitis” refers to bacterial infections of the gums. These infections cause many problems. They cause inflammation of the gums, but also cause bone to be lost near the teeth. The term “gingivitis” refers to mild gum inflammation. When it has been happening for several years and has started to cause bone loss, the name Periodontitis applies.

Traditional dentists and dental hygienists recommend having the gums and teeth cleaned professionally (and expensively - by them!) every 3 or 4 months. I wonder if that is really necessary. It seems like there should be some natural remedy that could counteract the progression of gingivitis and periodontitis.

Actually, in the case of our seventeen year old son, we have ordered a bottle of Oram Plus.

This preparation is a combination of natural essential oils, herbs and plant extracts… our son is scheduled to have a gum treatment done tomorrow afternoon. I’ll be sure to fill you in on everything we find out.
