Does heart disease go along with gum disease?
Heart disease is a leading cause of death among men and women. Unfortunately, there seems to be evidence that gum disease can predispose someone to heart disease. This probably happens because the bacteria that causes the gum disease gets into the bloodstream. From there they attach to the fat deposits in the blood vessels. The theory goes that the result can be blood clots or a heart attack.
If you have had a heart valve replacement or other known problems with your valves, you need to take good care of your gums. Also, be sure to tell your dentist about any problems you have with your heart.
